As CEO of Germane Solutions, Mr. Boll is nationally recognized for his consummate expertise in addressing the financial, operational and strategic issues associated with academic medical organizations, teaching hospitals, and health centers. With more than 35 years of graduate medical education experience, he has become an industry leader, highly sought out by members in the medical community looking to create or optimize their existing program.

Prior to starting Germane Solutions, Mr. Boll was the national healthcare consulting partner for Deloitte and Touche, leading their Academic Medical Organization consulting services. His success and experience there inspired him to create a GME firm that focused on using technology as a means to provide innovative solutions to the industry as a whole.

Mr. Boll has since conducted numerous training sessions and presentations to leading organizations including Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), American Hospital Association (AHA), Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems (COTH), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), Association for Hospital Medical Education (AHME) and various state healthcare organizations. His insight has been featured in a variety of industry and national publications including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

 

 

    James Brown, MHA

    A thought leader in the health care industry, Mr. Brown brings more than 20 years of experience, specializing in the areas of strategy, operations, and revenue cycle with an emphasis in physician/hospital ambulatory care and academic organizational structures. As president of Germane Solutions, he is focused on overseeing the firm’s overall operations, strategic partnerships and signature product offerings.

    Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Mr. Brown was the principal in the health care practice at Deloitte Consulting. While in that role, he directed the firm’s professionals responsible for delivering services in the middle segment of the revenue cycle including charge capture, pricing, and CDM standardization.

    Notable accomplishments include redesigning and implementing charge revenue cycle protocols at several large health systems, resulting in returns exceeding $20 million in increased, recurring net patient revenues. He has also served as the interim chief financial officer of academic affairs for a major Midwestern academic medical center.

    Mr. Brown holds a bachelor of arts degree from Bowling Green University and a master of healthcare administration degree from Xavier University.

     

      Susan Hearn, RN, BSN, MBA

      Ms. Hearn has over thirty years of experience in clinical and administrative healthcare.  Her substantial experience as a registered nurse and healthcare consultant bring to bear all the knowledge and expertise of a clinician along with a broad based understanding of the healthcare industry as a whole.  This unique insight informs her work in the areas of operations, strategy, financial planning, and change management. Her particular expertise is in directing and managing both planning and strategy projects as well as leading implementation for large scale academic clients and systems and small independent entities.

      Prior to joining Germane, Ms. Hearn worked as a Senior Manager in the health care practice at Deloitte Consulting.  While in that role, she led many of the firm’s large scale healthcare engagements.  Ms. Hearn holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Mt Saint Joseph and an MBA from the University of Cincinnati.

        Tracy Kulik

        Ms. Kulik brings more than 20 years of experience working with hospital administration – not-for-profit systems and proprietary hospital chains – focused on strategic planning, quality improvement, managed care and business development and market concentration in Children’s Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers. As Germane Solutions’ vice president of health access, Ms. Kulik supports health access networks and effectively develops or improves Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) throughout the country.

        Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Ms. Kulik was the president and co-founder of Collaborative Research, a consulting firm dedicated to supporting public health and social-service organizations in their pursuit of federal financing. While in that role, she successfully qualified six FQHCs for clients ranging from large health authorities and hospitals to health departments within small Community Health Centers with the support of existing FQHCs in order to expand their services or geographic locations.

        An accomplished speaker on clinical service line development, clinical pathways, quality improvement, managed care and pediatric healthcare, Ms. Kulik is highly sought out by industry leaders who rely on her research, process and outcome evaluation and clinical experience in social services and public health, with a focus on maternal and child welfare and HIV treatment and care.

        Ms. Kulik holds a bachelor of science degree in premedical science from Canisius College and a master of science degree in public health from Amherst College.

          Adam Middleton

          Mr. Middleton has committed his entire professional career to healthcare, working in for profit and not-for-profit hospitals, as a consultant to hospital systems, healthcare entities and physician practices.  For the last seven years, Adam has consulted with physician practices, post-acute providers and hospitals with particular focus on physician management, operations, finance and strategic planning. Among other projects, his key consultancy roles included the merger of two hospital managed service organizations, the startup of physician practices, and the negotiation of physician-hospital acquisitions.  He also led strategic planning for physician groups and hospital service lines. His work includes advising multiple entities to face the challenges of Value-Based Payments including the development of programs for bundled-payment initiatives.

          Adam founded Healthcare Advisory Network in 2008 to specialize in profitable growth strategies for hospitals, physicians and healthcare companies and joined Germane Solutions in 2016.  Prior to consulting, Adam was an executive at two major healthcare organizations in the greater Dayton area; Dayton Heart Hospital (physician owned jointly with MedCath) and Premier Health Partners.  As a lifelong Ohioan, Adam has been actively engaged in serving his community through public service as a firefighter/EMT and other civic activities.

           

            Stephen Miller

            With more than a decade of healthcare technology experience, Mr. Miller has quickly become a regarded resource within the healthcare IT industry, recognized for his ability to provide organizations with a detailed analysis of their existing programs. As vice president of data solutions, he is focused on developing reporting solutions and analyzing data from large healthcare IT systems throughout the country.

            Since joining Germane Solutions, Mr. Miller has created Physician Attribution, a state-of-the-art, patent pending technology resource that identifies the physician primarily responsible for managing the overall care during an inpatient stay. Data gathered from each stay is sent to physician profiling systems in order to create accurate individual physician metrics.  Additional developments include the interface for PROMPT, a revolutionary tool that delivers insights into operational, productivity, quality, and experience issues for both physicians and residents.

            An active member of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMMS), Mr. Miller is committed to remaining current on the ever changing world of healthcare IT, attending various educational seminars including this year’s Clinical and Business Intelligence Symposium.

            Mr. Miller holds a bachelor of business degree in management of information systems from Miami University. Database technical expertise includes SQL Server (2000, 2005, 2008 R2), Data Modeling, Performance Tuning, T-SQL, SSIS and SSRS.

             

              Don Pauley, MBA, CMPE

              An experienced fiscal officer, Mr. Pauley brings more than 15 years of physician-related healthcare management knowledge to Germane Solutions. As vice president of clinical operations, he is dedicated to helping clients get the most out of their graduate medical education enterprise. Clients appreciate his extensive financial and healthcare administration expertise and strong command of nearly every industry sector -- not-for-profit, for-profit, graduate medical education, academic practice, government, acquisition, cost containment, restructuring and product implementation.

              Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Mr. Pauley was administrator for the departments of surgery, orthopedics and neurosurgery at the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center. While there, he oversaw and directed the strategic, clinical, business and academic operations of more than 150 providers, resulting in more than $1 billion in gross revenue for the system.

              Mr. Pauley routinely attends continuing education seminars related to healthcare financial management, is certified by the American College of Medical Practice Executives and is an active member of the Medical Group Management Association.

              Mr. Pauley holds a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Marshall University and a master of business administration degree from West Virginia University.

                Mark Simonson

                Mr. Simonson brings nearly 35 years of healthcare reimbursement and public accounting experience to Germane Solutions. As vice president of reimbursement consulting, he is committed to providing reimbursement services to healthcare clients of all sizes throughout the country. Hospitals have come to depend on his reimbursement and financial expertise, allowing organizations to safely navigate through the maze of Medicare and Medicaid Regulations.

                Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Mr. Simonson was the director of health sciences, regulatory and capital markets consulting at Deloitte & Touche. While there, he became a thought leader in the industry, leading a network of consulting professionals who dedicated their time helping clients address audit, accounting and reimbursement issues for an array of healthcare entities including: Academic Medical Centers, Acute Hospitals, Specialty Hospitals (Rehabilitative, Psychiatric, Children’s Hospitals and Long Term Care Hospitals), Skilled Nursing Facilities, Home Health Agencies, Hospices and Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (CORF).

                Mr. Simonson has published several articles and delivered thought provoking speaking engagements covering complex, industry related subject matter to various organizations including the American Health Lawyers Association.

                Mr. Simonson holds a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Minnesota State University.

                 

                  Thomas Gentile, MSA

                  With nearly 50 years of graduate medical (GME) experience, Mr. Gentile is a highly respected leader in the GME industry, specializing in strategic planning, accreditation of GME programs, the financing of GME and physician workforce issues. As Germane Solutions’ senior advisor, he is dedicated to helping hospitals nationwide create and maintain GME programs that are both successful and sustainable.

                  Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Mr. Gentile retired as the vice president of academic affairs/chief academic officer for St. John Health System and also held an appointment as the adjunct assistant dean at Wayne State University School of Medicine. While in those roles, he was lauded for his strong command of the industry as a whole and as such, was awarded the AHME John C. Leonard Medical Education Award, the Southeastern Michigan Continuing Medical Education Excellence in Medical Education Award and the Thomas A. Angott Award from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

                  A past president of the Association for Hospital Medical Education (AHME), Mr. Gentile was a founding member of the AHME Council of Transitional Year Program Directors and the Council for Continuing Medical Education. He is currently a reviewer for Academic Medicine, the American Osteopathic Association Journal, a member of the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Michigan Continuing Medical Education Consortium (SEMCME), a member of the Michigan State Medical Society Committee for Continuing Medical Education, and a member of the board of directors of the A.T. Still Osteopathic Postgraduate Training Institution (OPTI).

                  Mr. Gentile holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wayne State University and a master of science in administration degree from Central Michigan University.

                    Mark Cummings, MA, PhD

                    Bringing nearly 40 years of graduate medical education, healthcare and research experience to Germane Solutions, Mr. Cummings is currently providing industry insight and expertise as a senior consultant. His commitment to providing clients with proven strategies and specialized plans to facilitate GME success has been lauded by teaching hospitals throughout the country.

                    Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Mr. Cummings was the associate dean of Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. While in that role, he oversaw the school’s graduate medical education program and provided thought leadership to faculty and residents, ensuring the department’s success.

                    His achievements have been largely recognized by the medical community and has recently been awarded the Ph.D. Award for Outstanding Leadership in Medical Scholarship established in 2012, the Distinguished Service Award by the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators in 2012 as well as several Outstanding Service Awards by various graduate medical education institutions.

                    Since 1997, Mr. Cummings has been an evaluator for the North Central Association Accreditation Program and is currently a reviewer and featured author for the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Academic Medicine and Family Medicine. He is also an active member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Association for Hospital Medical Education and American Osteopathic Association.

                    Mr. Cummings holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Quincy College, a master of arts degree and doctor of philosophy from the University of Colorado.

                      Margaret Hardy, JD

                      An accomplished and highly recognized attorney and health policy analyst, Ms. Hardy brings more than 30 years of experience working with national health care associations to Germane Solutions.  She lends her expertise to our firm serving as a subject matter expert focusing solely on osteopathic training, helping clients reach and maintain compliance within the industry.

                      Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Ms. Hardy was the director of Graduate Medical Education Policy and Development for the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).  While in that role, she represented the AOA before federal agencies, commissions, advisory bodies and other national healthcare professional organizations. Additionally, she monitored and analyzed current legislative and regulatory issues, assessing impact on osteopathic medical education as well as created and directed the Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education (OGME) Development Initiative.

                      A member of the District of Columbia bar, Ms. Hardy also served as the vice president of Federal Relations and Policy for the Community Hospital Medical Education Alliance where she represented the associations before congress, federal agencies, commissions, advisory bodies and other national health care entities. Prior to that, she spent 18 years serving as assistant general counsel at the American Hospital Association analyzing legal, regulatory, and public policy developments affecting hospitals and other health care institutions.

                      Ms. Hardy holds a bachelor of arts degree from Miami University and a juris doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

                        David Marler, M.Ed., PhD

                        With more than 30 years of experience working in the graduate and continuing medical education industry, Dr. Marler is highly regarded and incredibly sought out by leaders in the medical community. As a senior consultant for Germane Solutions, he helps hospitals seeking accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACGME) sponsoring institutions and accreditation of new residency and fellowship programs including completion of ACGME program information forms and institutional review documents in preparation for ACGME institutional and residency program site visits.

                        Prior to joining Germane Solutions, Dr. Marler was a field representative for the ACGME where he conducted more than 600 site visits for sponsoring institutions and individual residency programs. Preceding his role with the ACGME , he was the director of medical education and DIO for Providence Hospital and Medical Centers. While there, he helped develop new residency programs in Anesthesiology, Interventional Cardiology, Cardiac Electrophysiology, Hematology-Oncology, Perinatal Medicine, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, Osteopathic Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery, Osteopathic Family Medicine, and Osteopathic Internship.

                        Dr. Marler holds a bachelor of arts degree and a master of education degree from Mississippi State University and doctor of philosophy in higher education administration from Michigan State University.
