The Client
A major metropolitan academic medical center with nationally recognized specialized surgical services partnered with Germane Solutions to strengthen its Graduate Medical Education enterprise. The organization sponsors 23 residency and fellowship programs with 400 residents and fellows and was committed to maintaining excellence in medical education while navigating organizational change.
The Challenge
Significant turnover within the GME office had created leadership and operational gaps, making it difficult to maintain consistency across accreditation compliance, program administration, and day-to-day operations. Without experienced leadership in place the organization was experiencing institutional compliance exposure, accreditation risk, unclear accountability, and increased pressure on the remaining team. Leadership recognized the need for experienced interim support to stabilize the enterprise and provide recommendations for sustainably organizing the GME infrastructure while recruiting permanent personnel.
The Solution
Germane Solutions provided interim GME leadership by embedding operational leadership and enterprise improvement expertise and effectively backfilling a critical full-time leadership role during the transition period. While ensuring continuity of operations, the Germane Solutions team partnered with the DIO to assume accountability for GME operations, accreditation compliance, and staff support. As part of the embedded FTE support, Germane conducted a comprehensive review of GME operations, governance, policies, accreditation processes, and staffing infrastructure to identify opportunities for improvement. Through hands-on leadership and implementation of best practices, Germane Solutions addressed operational inefficiencies, resolved existing gaps, and established stronger processes that positioned the organization for long-term success.

The Germane Effect
By providing experienced interim leadership, Germane Solutions delivered immediate stability during a critical period of transition while giving the organization the confidence and time needed to conduct a thoughtful search for permanent leadership. The engagement resulted in measurable improvements across the GME enterprise, including strengthened operational efficiency, significant reductions in accreditation citations, and standardized processes that supported sustained compliance. Ultimately, the organization emerged with a fully restructured GME office equipped to support educational excellence, organizational growth, and long-term success.
