For over 40 years, Mr. Boll’s passion has been growing and advancing Graduate Medical Education in America. After spending 28 years working with some of the largest academic institutions in the country, he left that position to focus full time on creating greater transparency and understanding of GME programs. His idea was to start Germane Solutions, a firm that combined cutting edge technology and years of hard-earned expertise in order to give clients more insight than ever before. In addition to being CEO of Germane, Art also has extensive experience developing ambulatory care services, maximizing reimbursement opportunities, structuring of academic support agreements, and creating economic incentives for teaching, research and clinical programs. Art has conducted numerous training sessions and presentations for organizations such as the AHA, AAMC, GBA, AHME and various state health care organizations.

Susan Hearn, RN, BSN, MBA

Vice President

Mrs. Hearn leads our Academic Medicine Consulting Group which encompasses all graduate medical education consulting in the areas of strategy, accreditation, finance, and program operations. Mrs. Hearn has over thirty years of experience in clinical and administrative healthcare. Her substantial experience as a registered nurse and healthcare consultant brings to bear all the knowledge and experience of a clinician along with a broad-based understanding of the healthcare industry. This unique insight informs her work in the areas of operations, strategy, financial planning, and change management. Her expertise is in directing and managing both planning and strategy projects as well as leading implementation for large-scale academic clients, health systems, and small independent entities. Prior to Germane, Ms. Hearn worked as a Senior Manager in the healthcare practice at Deloitte Consulting. While in that role, she led many of the firm’s large-scale healthcare engagements. Ms. Hearn holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Mt. Saint Joseph and an MBA from the University of Cincinnati.

Joseph Catanese, MHA

Managing Director

Mr. Catanese has vast experience in GME consultation for hospitals located throughout the United States. Notably, Mr. Catanese brings significant subject matter expertise and experience in strategic planning, new program development, GME institutional accreditation/sponsorship for new teaching hospitals, transitioning/accrediting AOA/ACGME Single Accreditation System (SAS) programs, as well as accreditation of new and existing ACGME programs. Mr. Catanese spearheaded the development and vast expansion of the Accreditation service line with 5,000 positions and counting created under his leadership. Prior to joining Germane, Mr. Catanese was an Administrative Fellow in Graduate Medical Education at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). His responsibility included working in an administrative role with GME programs across a large, urban health system with over 180 residency and fellowship programs and more than 1,600 residents. Mr. Catanese received his Bachelor of Science degree from John Carroll University and a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree from Des Moines University.

Jon Scaglione, CPA

Managing Director

Mr. Scaglione joined Germane in 2010 and has since developed his subject matter expertise in the complex regulatory rules governing Medicare GME Reimbursement as well as the Medicare Cost Reports (MCRs). His tenure includes providing extensive GME consulting services across the entire life cycle of GME from initial planning and implementation to complex change management to a wide variety of clients across the country, including hospitals, health systems, and medical schools. Mr. Scaglione’s expertise in GME finance provides significant value to his clients in helping to identify cost savings, increased GME reimbursement, and financial strategies to improve GME teaching institutions. Mr. Scaglione is responsible for the oversight of proforma development, reimbursement profiles, MCR review, and financial strategy development for all AMCG clients. Mr. Scaglione is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the State of Ohio and holds a BS/BA in Accounting from The Ohio State University.

Director of Operations

Ms. Jiffie Hart serves as Director of Operations, which oversees all support functions-including accounting, and IT, and works very closely with HR. Ms. Hart was directly responsible for implementing our accounting processes and drafting many of the policies that continue to structure how Germane operates today. These processes were instrumental during the rapid growth period of 2017-18, when Germane was awarded Top Consulting Firm for Growth. Under her leadership, the administrative group grew to a staff of eight while the company employee count more than doubled. During her tenure, the business accounting platform transitioned to Intacct – a robust ERP. This system allows Ms. Hart to develop strong reports and metrics, that are provided to Leadership for detailed company and project management financials. Ms. Hart provides financial insight to leadership on company and project financials. Ms. Hart served our military for over 22 years in various capacities. The majority of her tenure as Air Traffic Controller, including Facility Chief Controller; she also oversaw ATC training for Air Force Materiel Command. Ms. Hart holds an Associates in Applied Sciences from the University of New Hampshire, as well as in Applied Sciences from the Community College of the Air Force. Ms. Hart is proud to say, ‘she manages the BEST TEAM in Germane.”

Darla Cade, SHRM SCP, PHR

Chief Human Resource Officer

Darla Cade, SHRM SCP, PHR - leads Human Resources and oversees our Benefit Programs. Mrs. Cade has been in the HR realm for over 25 years specializing in employee development, benefit management, talent recruitment, workplace safety, and employee relations. She believes to be successful in HR – one must always keep the focus on the human in Human Resources. Her background includes many different industries-including union and nonunion; manufacturing; banking; and non-profit sectors. Additionally, she has been involved in the creation of many small companies’ HR Programs. Mrs. Cade holds a bachelor’s in foreign language/business management from Wright State University. She is certified by both the Society of Human Resources Management/SHRM and Human Resource Certification Institute/HRCI. She is also licensed by the state of Ohio in the lines of life and health – which provide underwriting understanding when dealing with employee benefits. She serves on the Board for the Miami Valley HR Association; is a Team Member with Silver is Gold; serves with both the ERA and CAIN organizations in HR Advisory Support. She follows her mantra, “Success is Found in Service: exemplary service to my company, extraordinary service to my employees.”

In her five years at Germane, Kelsey Hogan has managed many GME engagements in small community hospitals and large academic systems alike. Kelsey serves as a leader in the accreditation service line and has extensive experience with GME strategic planning. Kelsey received her Bachelor in Business Management from Miami University.

Manager, Accreditation & Operations

Mrs. Hutchinson brings ten years’ GME experience to Germane. She’s worked as a medical student and residency program coordinator, manager, and ADME for both prestigious Universities and Community Hospitals. Her focus is Accreditation compliance and Operational/Performance Improvement. Cyn has a Bachelor in Social Work from the University of Georgia and a Master of Education from Vanderbilt University.

Mr. Knepper has extensive financial, operational, and strategic insight related to Graduate and Undergraduate Medical Education. As a key member of our management team, Kyle brings over seven years of project management and process improvement experience to our client’s organizations. Kyle hails from Ohio and received his Bachelor of Science from Wright State University.

Manager, Strategy & Finance

Scott Masin delivers financial and strategic expertise utilizing methods that incorporate Medicare Cost Reports and Medicare GME Reimbursement. He has significant experience in GME systems strategy, feasibility assessments, and system affiliations and resident schedules that allow for maximum reimbursement for hospitals. Scott holds a Bachelor of Science from Wittenberg University and a Master of Business Administration from Wright State University.

Ms. Umuhoza brings over seven years’ experience in hospital administration, Public Health Entities, and FQHCs. She’s worked with clients ranging from academic medical centers, health systems, and community hospitals on GME strategy, feasibility assessments, partnership and network development, and grants management and writing. Sylvie has a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Louis University and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Virginia Commonwealth University.
